Celebrate National Lemonade Day August 20

Aug 20, 2013|

What better way than to celebrate the closing days of summer with the drink that epitomizes the season: lemonade! August 20 marks National Lemonade Day. As a leading manufacturer of premium juice dispensers that deliver refreshing, authentic juice flavor, BUNN takes special interest in such days on our calendar. Our hot water dispensers or home brewers can also be used if making your own recipe (see below), and our Ultra equipment also makes great frozen lemonade concoctions. Look back here for another post we are working on that suggests lemonade is JDF 4S PC now one of the fastest growth categories on beverage menus in North America.

A few interesting facts to consider about this citrusy, nutritional fruit:

    • A lemon tree can produce up to 600 lemons in one year.

    • People in the Middle Ages started serving a lemon wedge with a fish, believing that the acidic juice would dissolve any bones that were accidentally swallowed.
    • The "ade" in lemonade means that the product is not 100 percent juice.
    • The first lemonade "soft drink" debuted in Paris on August 20th, 1630 and was made from sparkling water and lemon juice sweetened with honey.
    • Variations of lemonade can be found in many countries and may be flavored with salt, ginger, saffron, garlic, cumin, or vanilla bean.
    • It is thought that lemons originated from Southeast Asia and were brought to the New World by Christopher Columbus. Primary exporters now include countries around the Mediterranean Sea like Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Lebanon, and Cyprus.
    • California produces almost all of the lemons for the United States.
    •  The earliest documented lemonade stands were introduced by a young entrepreneur named Edward Bok who formed them in Brooklyn street cars from 1873 to 1876.
    •  4-year-old Alex Scott started the nonprofit Alex's Lemonade Stand in 2000 after learning she had cancer and she sought to find a cure. She lived only 4 more years and in that short time raised more than $1 million for cancer research. That organization has since raised more than $25 million nationwide for children's cancer research.
    • The national organization Lemonade Day is an experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business using a lemonade stand.
