Question

Dr. Brew:
I just bought a Smart Wave APS and I am having trouble setting it up. Using default settings and adding 8 heaping teaspoons of coffee to the basket it sometimes over flows and creates a big mess. I like my coffee strong and I'd like to know the combination that allows for the best brew without overflowing? Also, I don't know what the difference is between brew time and brew meter. It would be helpful if the manual explained what these things do :-)
Thank you for your help.
Peter

Answer

Peter,

You mention the use of the factory default settings. the volume of water dispensed over the ground coffee should be approximately 64 ounces. I used a couple different roast & ground coffee samples to find out how much (weight) coffee you were actually using. On average I measured between 1.3 & 1.4 ounces of coffee with your 8 heaping teaspoon method. This coffee to water ratio is going to make a pretty weak brew. I would suggest two& a half time more coffee (3.5 ounces).

Brew Time (A-1 or B-1) is the setting required to control the volume (64) entering the heating tank. (increase to add volume/ decrease to reduce volume)

Brew Meter (pre-programmed pulse-brew settings) is a method to extend the duration, at which the water is dispensed over the ground coffee.

I would also suggest a drip grind.

Happy Brewing,
