Deadlines are something that everyone faces at one time or another. You are either rushing to deliver the monthly report to your boss, or scrambling to finish the conclusion paragraph of your term paper. Tight deadlines can lead to little time to proofread, and probably on more than one occasion you've spotted an error in your documents...after you've submitted them! YIKES! There's good news - coffee may be able to help you.
According to study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2011, caffeine can actually help you spot errors in subject verb agreement and verb tense. In the study, a group of college students were "given capsules containing one of four doses of caffeine: none, 100 milligrams (the amount found in 8-ounces brewed coffee), 200 milligrams (found in 16-ounces coffee), or 400 milligrams (found in 20-ounces of coffee)."(MSNBC.com)
Forty-five minutes after being given the capsules, the students were given a timed proofreading test. They were asked to find as many spelling and grammatical errors in the allotted time.
The results showed that students who were given caffeine spotted (and fixed) more mistakes in subject-verb agreement and verb tense, as opposed to students who received no caffeine.
So before you turn in your next big project you may want to grab a cup of coffee and read it over one last time!
