Coffee Ordering Lingo Cheat Sheet

The holidays are right around the corner, which means---HOLIDAY SHOPPING!   You will be out on the town picking up gifts for everyone on your list.  Holiday shopping can be a very strenuous activity and zap your energy.  You will need a little pick me up to help you power through, and a coffee based drink like a latte or cappuccino from your local coffee shop may be the answer! If stopping by that coffee shop gives you anxiety because what the heck do all those terms and drinks mean?!  Don't worry because we have made a Coffee Ordering Lingo cheat sheet.   It contains definitions of some popular coffee shop drinks and standard coffee house ordering jive.  Learn some coffee ordering lingo and impress the barista behind the counter with your order!

  • Americano: Espresso and hot water 1
  • Breve: Latte made with steamed half and half.  1
  • Caf au Lait: French version of caffe lattee which means "coffee with milk". Equals amounts of coffee and hot milk. 3
  • Caf Latte: Espresso and steamed milk 1
  • Con Panna: Espresso topped with whipped cream.1
  • Cappuccino: Espresso , steamed milk and frothed milk 1 & 3
  • Double: Twice as much.  Just say "double" before the thing you want twice as much of when ordering. 2
  • Dry: A drink with frothed milk only (little or no creamy hot milk).2
  • Espresso: Beverage, and brewing method, for coffee using pressurized hot water to extract the flavor of the bean.
  • Frothed Milk: Milk that has been heated and aerated with hot steam.    Frothed milk will increase in volume. 3
  • Haf Caf: A equal blend of decaf and regular coffee. 2
  • Latte: Espresso and steamed milk 1
  • Macchiato: Espresso with a dollop of steamed milk 4
  • Mocha: Steamed milk, espresso and chocolate syrup or powder. 1
  • Skinny: A drink that is made with non-fat milk. 2
  • Shot: One serving of either espresso and/or flavored syrups.2
  • Single: one shot of espresso ordered straight, or it can also apply to other ingredients such as a sugar or flavor shots .
  • Solo: A drink made with one shot of espresso.2
  • Steamed Milk: Milk that has been heated by steam.3
  • Triple: Three shots of espresso.2
  • Whip: Whipped cream
  • White: Black coffee with cold or room temperature milk 4
  • With Legs: Drink is prepared in a to-go cup with a lid. 2
