If you are interested in learning more about coffee brewing, please plan to come by Coffee Preparation Methods and Variables, the lecture that Brad Smith of Distant Lands Coffee Roasters and I will be presenting from 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m., Friday, April 16 in convention center room 207D at the SCAA Expo in Anaheim April 15-18.

In this basic presentation, the importance of water, time, temperature, turbulence, and filtration in the brewing process will be explained along with the role each element plays. You'll learn how to match grind to brew time and how to use the Coffee Brewing Control Chart.

Ever wonder what "decoction" means? We'll define that term, as well others like "grind size control," "pre-infusion," "pulse brew," "variable by-pass," and "digital temperature adjustment" and how these techniques can be used to change brew flavor and extraction.

Finally, you'll get an understanding (or at least we hope you do) of the roles that water quality and coffee filters play in the brewing formula. We prepared this presentation so that attendees will leave with a thorough understanding of the variables of the brewing process.
